NOTE: If you are looking for a more recent and thorough take on this subject, in July 2023, I published Spotting Anti-Trans Media Bias on Detransition, which addresses the realities of people who detransition, potential implications for gender-affirming care, and explains why the media has largely failed the public in their coverage of this issue. Furthermore, the Katie Herzog article discussed in this post was one of the first mainstream media outlets to raise the notion that “social contagion” was “turning kids transgender.” If Herzog had done a few simple Google searches (as I did in 2019), she would have known that this idea was invented on anti-trans parent websites (or perhaps she knew this already but didn't divulge that information with readers). Anyway, for all the arguments and research studies contradicting this idea, please consult my 2023 review essay, All the Evidence Against Transgender Social Contagion.
A year ago I wrote a long-read essay called Detransition, Desistance, and Disinformation: A Guide for Understanding Transgender Children Debates - it was my attempt to address the many issues that are usually overlooked or erased in sensationalistic & fear-mongering articles about people who detransition. Between that piece and a shorter follow up post, I felt like I said just about everything I had to say about the subject.
